Picture yourself gliding effortlessly through the clear, blue water surrounded by a myriad of breathtaking colors. The coral sways around you as you float mesmerized by all the sea creatures buzzing around. The best part… No cell phone ringing, no cars honking, no kids yelling. All you hear are the sounds of your bubbles, the fish munching on the coral and the frequent WOW sounds escaping your lips. This is scuba diving.

Begin your underwater journey today with our Open Water SCUBA Diver course. Learn the skills required to make you a good, comfortable and confident diver. Upon completion of your certification, you will receive a personal identification card, similar to a driver’s license. This card is your ticket to diving some of the world’s most amazing destinations and seeing things less than 1% people will experience!

Our Open Water SCUBA Diver course consists of the following training elements:

  • Independent Study: Complete your choice of SDI or PADI eLearning program
  • Classroom Sessions: Discussion style interaction with an instructor.
  • Pool Sessions: Learn the skills necessary to be a confident and safe diver.
  • Open Water Dives: Put it all together and practice being a diver.

During your independent study (eLearning) you will learn about:

  • The Aquatic Environment: vision, light, sound, heat loss, tides, currents, waves, surge, etc
  • Physics and Physiology: buoyancy, pressure, air spaces, breathing compressed air, etc.
  • Safe diving practices always breathing, ascending slowly and safety stops.
  • The various gear we use while diving.

During your classroom sessions you will discuss:

  • The components that make up your life support gear and how they work.
  • Assembling and disassembling your gear.
  • The effects of depth, pressure and breathing pressurized air on your body.
  • Good dive practices both underwater and on the surface.
  • What to expect after you are certified and on your first dive adventure.

During your pool sessions you will:

  • Learn and practice the necessary skills to be a comfortable and competent diver.
  • Learn how to properly equalize your air spaces.
  • Develop skills like clearing your mask, air management, proper swimming techniques and more.
  • Work on mastering buoyancy control, which is the ultimate access to amazing dive experiences

During your open water dives you will:

  • Learn to prepare yourself, your equipment and your dive area for diving.
  • Practice and implement what you learned during your pool and classroom sessions.
  • Hang out, have fun and see what it is like to be on a dive vacation . . . Even in Kankakee.
  • Go diving! Explore the quarry or ocean.

We put as much information on here to create as complete a picture as possible of the Open Water SCUBA Diver certification process. Read through it and if you have any questions, or prefer to talk  to someone about what’s involved, please Contact Rami.

Prerequisites

  • Be at least 12 (please Contact Us for 10 & 11 year olds)
  • Be comfortable in water with basic swim skills.
  • Be in good mental and physical condition.

Paperwork: Download and Complete

Stop by the Shop

  • Bring your completed paperwork or complete it at the shop with Rami.
  • Sign up and pay for the course. Please see the Cost tab for details.
  • Setup your eLearning program (or you can do it at home later). We will send you the code.
  • Go over any other details or questions you may have, and confirm schedule.
  • Get sized for a BCD.
  • Purchase gear you need for class.

Classroom & Pool Sessions

  • For group classes, please see the Upcoming Classes tab. For a private course, we will create a schedule together that works for you.
  • You will attend four classroom sessions, each three and half hours long.
  • You will attend four pool sessions, each three and half hours long.
  • All classroom sessions are held at the dive shop.
  • All pool sessions are held at the High Ridge YMCA at Touhy and Western in Chicago.

Open Water Certification Dives

  • You have a few options for completing your four open water dives (minimum of two days)
    1. Complete them with us at Haigh Quarry, in Kankakee, between May and October
    2. Complete them with us on one of our dive trips.
    3. Complete them on your vacation.

Notes:

  • All Classroom Sessions are held at the shop.
  • All Pool Sessions are held at a local YMCA a few minutes from the shop.
  • All Open Water Certification Dives are held at Haigh Quarry in Kankakee.

  • September 16 & 17, 2017

Note: Before completing your Open Water Certification Dives, you must successfully complete the eLearning program of your choice as well as classroom and pool training in one of the the schedules below.

Please note, our pool is closed for cleaning at the moment, and I will be traveling at the end of the month. Classes will resume in October. Please contact Contact Rami for information.

Note: As our student, you get a 10% discount on gear you buy at the shop.

Gear included in your course fee:

  • BCD

These items are included during your Open Water Certification Dives only.

NOTE: To receive your Open Water Diver certification, you must complete the Class & Pool portion of the training as well as the Open Water Certfication Dives. You will see the pricing for each portion broken down below.

We offer two types of courses to complete your class and pool training: Group and Private

Group Classroom & Pool (SDI eLearning $400 / PADI eLearning $475):

  • We need a minimum of two students to start a class, but you will not have more than four students in your class.
  • Class dates are set and may be viewed on the Upcoming Classes tab.

Private Classroom & Pool (SDI eLearning $650 / PADI eLearning $725):

  • These classes are ideal for:
    • Students who have a tight time frame or complicated schedule.
    • Students who need or want one on one-or-one-on-two training.
    • 10 to 13 year olds must do private lessons and no more than two students.
  • Minimum of one student, maximum four.
  • Dates may be scheduled on weekdays or weekends.

Included in the Classroom & Pool Price:

  • eLearning program
  • Student Logbook
  • All classroom sessions
  • All pool sessions
  • Use of SCUBA Gear (as noted on Gear tab)

 

Group Open Water Certification Dives ($450)

  • Minimum of four students, maximum eight
  • Weekend dates are set and may be viewed on the Upcoming Classes tab.

Private Open Water Certification Dives ($750)

  • Minimum of one student, maximum four
  • Dates may be scheduled on weekdays or weekends

Included in the Certification Dives Price:

  • All certification dives (minimum of two days)
  • Use of SCUBA Gear (as noted on Gear tab)
  • Air fills
  • Sandwich lunch on the first day
  • Water and snacks
  • Certification processing
