It’s hard to imagine I have not been back to this magical place since November 2015. Our first time here, February 2013, was, as Ron put it, a dream we did not know we had. How do you describe the experience of being only a few feet away from a massive 40-foot humpback whale mama while her baby plays around you? How do you relate the experience of being surrounded by wild dolphins, some of which, demanding your love and attention? Maybe you like a little more of a rush and want to be immersed in the midst of a bait ball, watching tuna, dolphins and a plethora of sharks fill their salty bellies. Perhaps you want to swim inches under a Pacific Giant Manta while it enjoys the bubble spa your breathing apparatus provides.

No, that’s all too boring for you? How about the chance of a dive on Roca Partida where you get to swim with a whale shark, play with Dolphins, dance with Mantas and watch the schooling hammerheads, silkies and Galapagos shark cruise in the blue . . . All on one dive! These are the kinds of experiences divers seek and have diving the Revillagigedo Archipelago, more commonly known as Socorro!

I get it. You’re thinking why is he still writing? I’m already sold. He said dolphins, mantas and sharks on one dive!?!?!? Here, take my first three born. I’m in. First off, I know you love your kids and they are special, but I will take the cash over your first born or three. I hear you, and I am with you. I am sold too. As a matter of fact, I am putting my deposit down now, as should you 😉 But, allow me to titillate you a little more.

The Revillagigedo Archipelago is a group of four volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean with a unique ecosystem. They lie about 250 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas in the Pacific Ocean. In July
The Diving
Diving the Socorro Islands is a mix of blue water diving and structure diving. It is not reef like you find in the Caribbean or East Asia. It is rock, massive rock formations with some growth here and there. But you are not here to dive the reef. Diving Socorro is about being with the big animals. Some we see from a distance, some we see up close. Some we can interact and swim with. Some, the dolphins, let us pet them. You will not spend much time, if any, with your head down looking for critters.

Depending on the dive sites, we either dive directly off the mothership or board the smaller pangas (zodiacs) and speed off to our destination. There is usually a current present on all dives. Some dives you drift with it. Some you swim against it. Some are a hodge podge of drift and fight. Some you simply hang your fins, deploy your signal tube and wait for your ride home, hopefully with a cool drink in tow. Unless, of course, that was the first dive if the day. Then hopefully it is a hot coco!

2016 the islands were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in November 2017 declared to be a marine reserve and a national park of Mexico (Wikipedia). While you cannot explore the islands, you can explore the waters around them. Because of their location and currents, the waters around the Socorro islands are fill of nutrients and life, Pelagic life . . . and lot of lobsters (Ramipedia).

The islands are home to several shark species including: hammerheads, Galapagos, silkies, silver tips, white tip reef sharks and the sneaky Tiger, more commonly known as Senor Tigre. You see them flying solo or schooling by the hundreds. Don’t forget to upgrade your mask, at Scuba Sensation, with the new Turbo Deluxe Diesel Rear-View Magnifier. This is not a place you want to be missing the action behind you. Just when your breath is taken away, but not really because, you know, the whole number one rule in diving thing… I digress, there are sharks schooling in front of you, your shooting away with your new camera, purchased at Scuba Sensations, your breath is taken away and you feel a tap on your shoulder. You turn around, and well hello Mr. Giant Pacific Manta. What’s that, you want me to take some pictures of you. Oh, you want me to blow bubbles on your belly. Ok, hold on, these dolphins want me to rub their bellies and that whale shark is coming in kind of hot. Let me see if I can do all this at once.

While I have not been to Indonesia and hear Raja Ampat is one of the best places to dive (you should join us for our February 2021 trip), Socorro is most certainly the most exciting place I have visited. Roca Partida is my favorite dive site. And I am looking forward to returning for my fourth time. I want you to come with me. You want to come with me. Nothing should get in our way!
Between Dives
The Solmar V is a 119 foot sea vessel. It is fully equipped with a spa, tennis courts, amusement park, casino and karaoke lounge. During your downtime, you will not be bored. Seriously, you ask?

No. Are you kidding me. The trip is $4,500 not $450,000. It’s got a sundeck, a bow, a dining/salon area and dive deck with houses the camera table and beverage cooler. It’s not difficult to find yourself some quiet time, read a book, edit your photos, journal or nap. Movies and nature documentary series can be found playing in the salon or play what you like from the library. The liveaboard life is a relaxing and quite life, because during the day, the diving is madness!
